What Canberra Day commemorates
Canberra was formally named at a ceremony on 12 March 1913. The annual public holiday is observed on the second Monday in March, so its holiday date is not always 12 March. In 2027, it is Monday 8 March. Keeping the anniversary and observed holiday separate avoids a common diary mistake.
The ACT Legislative Assembly’s history of the capital provides background to the naming. Canberra’s story also extends beyond the city’s formal establishment; a civic anniversary should not be read as the beginning of the region’s history.
Why Reconciliation Day has its own place in the calendar
Reconciliation Day is an ACT public holiday observed on the first Monday on or after 27 May. In 2027, it falls on Monday 31 May. It is separate from Canberra Day, the King’s Birthday and a school holiday. Its date rule explains why the observed day can fall at the end of May or in early June.
The ACT Government describes the day in terms of truth-telling, listening, respect and unity. Community programmes and official resources give it meaning beyond a day away from work. Read the official Reconciliation Day resources and check the year’s published activities before planning to attend.

How the two days differ
Canberra Day is connected to the naming of the capital and its civic history. Reconciliation Day focuses on reconciliation and First Nations cultures and perspectives. They share ACT territory-wide holiday status, but the purpose and timing are different. One is in March; the other follows the 27 May date rule.
For a diary, label each holiday by name rather than simply “Canberra long weekend”. That helps a household or business explain why a service schedule changes and makes it easier to check the correct date when comparing the ACT calendar with another state.
Does either holiday apply across the NSW border?
These are ACT dates. Do not automatically add them to a NSW workplace calendar because Canberra is close by or because someone lives in the capital region. A person commuting between Canberra and Queanbeyan should confirm the relevant workplace arrangements and compare the two jurisdictional calendars.
For meetings involving both locations, treat the holiday as a potential scheduling difference. A Canberra office may have holiday arrangements while a nearby NSW office follows a different calendar. Establish the actual arrangements before assuming that a shared appointment will be possible.
Public holidays and event dates are different
An official holiday date does not establish the date, venue or opening time of every associated event. A programme may run across several days, and individual activities may need booking. The 2027 public holiday can be confirmed while a particular event programme is still unpublished.
Use the calendar for the day-off question and the organiser’s current information for the attendance question. This also applies to galleries, museums, public transport and hospitality venues. Checking both prevents a holiday-based itinerary being built around an assumed opening time.
How to plan around the 2027 dates
For a standard weekend roster, Canberra Day makes a three-day break from 6–8 March and Reconciliation Day makes one from 29–31 May. Four approved leave weekdays after either Monday can extend the break to nine consecutive days, but that is a leave-planning example rather than an automatic entitlement.
See the ACT 2027 long-weekend guide for comparisons. Keep the holiday’s purpose in view when choosing how to spend it, and use the year calendar to check the surrounding dates before submitting leave.
